Select Course Descriptions

Conflict Management (1 day, 1.5 or 2 days)

Develop confidence in dealing with conflict by learning what to do in different situations (e.g. when to hold firm, compromise or defer), how to be proactive so other people's reactions are positive, how to look at conflict so it causes less stress, and how to create win/win outcomes. Extending this to a 1.5 or 2 day course allows more exercises, practice to master the skills and approaches, and customization for particular workplaces.

Assertiveness Skills ( 1 or 2 days)

In this course, participants learn: to differentiate assertiveness from aggressiveness and submissiveness; to use 'I' statements to communicate firmly and clearly without causing offence; and communication skills to respond to others in the moment. An optional second day includes how to develop respectful relationships, how to bring out the best in others and how to overcome individual psychological barriers to assertiveness.

Facilitation Skills for Better Meetings (1 day)

Participants will consider what makes meetings frustrating or I effective. Then they learn how to structure key discussions to get insightful and inclusive participation, whether as the chair or by invisibly facilitating from the side of the room. The course includes practice in structuring, leading and constructively participating in discussions.

Emotional Intelligence (1 or 2 days)

Considered by many to be more important than IQ, emotional intelligence is key to success in every part of our lives. In this course, participants develop insight about their strengths and areas for growth in four key aspects of emotional intelligence: understanding, managing and expressing their own emotions, relating to others, making decisions and stress management. The optional second day contains units on improving various aspects of emotional intelligence.

Negotiation (2 days or 3 days)

In this course, participants learn four secrets to success in negotiation, how to prepare for a negotiation, how to structure discussions to avoid impasse and when to exit a negotiation. In the optional third day, participants have an additional practice session to deepen skills, and also to put the actual negotiation in a broader context including developing and sustaining relationship and ensuring the other party honours its commitments.

Workplace Mediation (2 to 3 days)

Participants learn how to resolve conflicts in which others are the key players, while still asserting their own interests. Conflict resolution skills include engaging others in interest-based (win/win) problem solving, helping others to understand the risks of not resolving the conflict, using independent standards, and communication skills to help each party understand the other's perspective. A third day is recommended to allow participants to engage in two practice sessions.
